The Migration Law constitutes three essential migratory categories, entitled "Stay status", replacing more than 30 different migratory characteristics that were provided for in the old General Population Act. The immigration status granted by the immigration authorities to foreigners depends on their "intention of residence" in Mexico and may be one of the following:
Visitor status allows entry to Mexico for short periods of time for various purposes, such as tourism, business or transit. A business visitor can participate in certain activities for a short period determined by the immigration authorities, but no longer than 180 days.
This status replaces most of the different options previously covered with non-immigrant, immigrant and immigrated conditions. Temporary resident status authorizes a foreigner to attend any place intended for the international transit of persons and to apply for entry into national territory, in order to stay for the term of the courses, studies, research projects or training carried out in educational institutions of the national educational system, as well as to carry out remunerated activities.
permission to work in the country in exchange for remuneration. Permanent residence can be obtained after an uninterrupted period of 4 years as a temporary resident, among other cases provided for in the Migration Law.
